PFF Ranks Burrow #2 In NFL

Dalton Wasserman and Max Chadwick of Pro Football Focus built their rankings off three seasons of data, and Burrow landed second overall, behind only Josh Allen. He earned a 91.3 PFF passing grade in eight games last year, posted the lowest turnover-worthy play rate by any quarterback with at least 250 dropbacks in the PFF era, and finished above the 95th percentile in four of PFF's six most stable passing metrics. Pete Prisco had him fifth in his Top 100, ahead of Mahomes.

Over the past three seasons, Joe Burrow produced exactly one explosive completion off under-center play action. One. The top five teams in under-center usage last year all finished in the top quarter of the league in explosive-play rate. The Bengals ranked 31st in under-center rate and 30th in under-center play action.

Dan Pitcher sees the same numbers. "It kind of smacks you in the face," he said. So now, for the first time in years, Burrow has been working under-center play-action dropbacks consistently through the offseason program. He's bought in. He can trace the cat-and-mouse history himself, walking through how defenses have adjusted to the Bengals at each stage of his career and why going back under center is the next move in the cycle.

The shotgun passing game isn't going anywhere. But getting from 31st to somewhere around 20th in under-center rate could unlock a dimension of this offense that's been sitting in the playbook for years.

Turner's agent posted "CB1 Calculated" on Instagram with Turner's handle and a "Soon" emoji. Spotrac projects a three-year deal around $21.1 million per year, which would make him the eighth-highest-paid corner in the league. Turner is the Bengals' best cornerback and has earned every dollar he's about to get. If they get this done before training camp opens July 25, that would be a notable departure from how this front office has operated.

Rookies report to training camp July 25. Veterans follow July 28.
