THE OFFENSE
Burrow Feels 'Inevitable' About This Season

Joe Burrow

Burrow compared the feeling around this building to LSU's summer of 2019, right before that team went 15-0 and won it all. The specific thing he's pointing to: the defense is finally deep enough that the offense doesn't have to play desperate football every week. "The last couple of years, it felt like every possession was do or die," he told SI's Albert Breer. "It doesn't feel that way this year."

On Chase's new podcast, he said: "I just want to win this year. I just want to win. The rest will take care of itself." Chase agreed, comparing the defense's swagger to the 2021 Super Bowl team. "It low-key feels like 2021 all over again."

Also from the Breer interview: Burrow said he used to think he didn't want to play very long and has completely reversed course. "I'm just going to go until I can't do it anymore. This is fun to do. What the hell else would I do?"

NFL executives polled by The Athletic's Mike Sando ranked Cincinnati seventh in the AFC, with the offensive line drawing the most skepticism. "Can vibes block T.J. Watt?" was Sando's framing. Fair question. The same starting five returns for the first time in the Burrow era, so we'll find out soon enough.

THE DEFENSE
Shemar Stewart Is Back on the Practice Field

Shemar Stewart

On Tuesday, Taylor said Stewart would stay on the rehab field "week to week." On Wednesday, Stewart was back in full uniform doing individual drills and conditioning with the defensive line group. His teammates chanted his name when he walked back into the locker room. "I felt like a little tiny pop. I thought it was over," Stewart said. His Week 1 availability for September 13 at Tampa Bay is not confirmed, but getting onto the field 11 days out keeps it on the table.

THE OFFENSIVE LINE
The Swing Tackle Competition Is Getting Interesting

Bengals offensive line

Myles Hinton was claimed off waivers from Philadelphia on Monday. Blake Freeland was signed to the practice squad Tuesday. That gives the Bengals four options behind Orlando Brown Jr. and Amarius Mims: Hinton on the 53, plus Rivers, Foster, and Freeland competing below him.

Freeland is the only one of the four who has started a regular-season game at tackle, with nine starts as a rookie with Indianapolis in 2023. He posted a 74.5 run-blocking grade in this preseason per PFF. Taylor isn't naming a depth-chart winner: "I can let them compete every week for the rest of the season."

THE SECONDARY
DJ Turner Extension Talks Have Stalled

DJ Turner

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported this week that a contract extension for Turner has "virtually no chance" of getting done before the opener. Turner tied for third among cornerbacks with 18 pass breakups last season and is entering his contract year at 25. Fowler flagged the franchise tag as a legitimate possibility next offseason, pointing to how the team handled Jessie Bates in 2022. Turner's response Thursday: "My mindset is gonna be the same regardless of if I'm the highest paid or if I don't have a contract." Trent McDuffie just signed for $31 million per year with the Rams, which sets the floor for what Turner will want.

Coming Up

Regular season opener vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Sunday September 13, 1 PM ET on FOX.
